Clinical and Financial Strategies for the Extended Care Professional

Executive Desk:

Effective Leaders are Effective Managers, Too

Why is it that no one aspires to be a good manager these days? While good leaders are essential for galvanizing people and moving organizations forward, managers are not any less important. Managers have to get things done through others. The manager is supposed to plan, organize, coordinate, and control.

Medline Offers Briefs To Nourish and Protect Patient Skin

Medline Industries, Inc. (Mundelein, Ill), announces the launch of RestoreTM briefs treated with RemedyTM Skin Repair Cream, a new skin care treatment that nourishes and protects patients’ skin. Restore briefs were designed to help healthcare workers achieve compliance with new Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines on preventing skin breakdown.

Developed with a “super-absorbent ultra care” core, the new briefs also provide maximum dryness. “Restore briefs will not only keep the patient dry and comfortable with the Remedy Skin Repair cream built right in—they will help to nourish the patient’s skin and prevent breakdown that can be a common problem for incontinent patients,” says Dan Love, president of Medline’s Personal Care division.
Remedy Skin Repair Cream is applied to the entire length of the brief to help restore and maintain the skin’s natural balance while delivering vital nutrients to the skin. This advanced skin care cream is made with Olivamine, a proprietary blend of antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, and natural pain inhibitor methylsulfonylmethane (MSM).
Designed to provide maximum comfort and dryness, Restore briefs offer 100% breathable side panels on the front and back, which improve air flow to keep residents comfortable and prevent irritation. The re-fastenable tape tabs with “grab-anywhere” technology allow the best possible fit and reduce waste (since caregivers can quickly check a brief and re-fasten). The soft, cloth-like outer cover is comfortable against the skin and helps prevent irritation and rashes.

Website Helps Families Deal with Alzheimer’s Disease

Many researchers predict that patients will soon know their homocysteine levels as readily as their cholesterol counts and blood pressure. The key is increased awareness of homocysteine research, and findings and a new website, http://www.YourMemoryMatters.com, will attempt to address that educational challenge.

The website provides background information on homocysteine in patient-friendly terms. The information is clinically sound but easy for patients and caregivers to understand. It offers a a general homocysteine-related resource that will communicate the relationship between elevated homocysteine levels and cognitive function to caregivers and physicians.
There is a tremendous amount of research currently being done on homocysteine. Many have been cardiovascular in nature, but a growing number of studies are now making the connection between dementia and homocysteine. Elevated homocysteine has been shown to be a strong, independent risk factor for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Other studies are underway to investigate whether Alzheimer’s disease can be delayed when patients actively manage their homocysteine levels. This website will provide a single forum for homocysteine-related findings.
The website will feature abstracts on the latest clinical studies related to homocysteine and dementia. It will also feature resources and information helpful to caregivers and families of dementia patients.

Motion-Activated Biohazard Trash Bin Opens Automatically

UltraTech International (Jacksonville, Fla) introduces the Ultra-SmartBin®, a product equipped with a motion-activated lid that opens automatically so that hands can stay safe from biohazards and other wastes. Infrared sensors detect motion and provide a “touchless” opening—there are no buttons to press, handles to lift, or pedals to step on. The lid automatically closes 3 seconds after a hand/object is moved from the area, providing odor and infection control.
Units can also be opened or closed manually from a front control panel. The red bins are available in 2-, 7-, and 12-gallon sizes and are marked with a biohazard label. A retainer ring in the 7- and 12-gallon sizes keeps liners from falling in and prevents unsightly liners from sticking out from under the lid. The 2-gallon size features an inner bin that is easily removed for quick content removal. All units operate on four D-cell batteries (not included). The expected battery life is 12 months under normal use (defined as opening and closing 30 times per day).
