Clinical and Financial Strategies for the Extended Care Professional

Executive Desk:

Effective Leaders are Effective Managers, Too

Why is it that no one aspires to be a good manager these days? While good leaders are essential for galvanizing people and moving organizations forward, managers are not any less important. Managers have to get things done through others. The manager is supposed to plan, organize, coordinate, and control.

HEALTHPOINT Begins Marketing and Selling Collagenase SANTYL

HEALTHPOINT, Ltd, a DFB Pharmaceuticals, Inc., affiliate company, announces that it will begin marketing and selling the Collagenase SANTYL® Ointment product line. The marketing and selling of SANTYL Ointment builds on HEALTHPOINT’s announcement in March 2006 that it had purchased the topical collagenase business from BioSpecifics Technologies Corp. As a result of that, HEALTHPOINT’s affiliate assumed ownership and operation of BioSpecifics’ manufacturing facility in Curaçao and certain other assets in Lynbrook, NY, owned by BioSpecifics’ affiliate, Advance Biofactures Corp. HEALTHPOINT’s affiliate plans to invest $1.5 million in upgrading the newly acquired manufacturing facilities, which currently produce Collagenase ABC, the essential ingredient in the prescription drug Collagenase SANTYL.
Collagenase SANTYL is a sterile enzymatic ointment used to debride pressure ulcers, chronic dermal ulcers, and severely burned areas by digesting collagen, a major component of devitalized tissue. The enzyme collagenase is derived from the fermentation of the bacterium Clostridium histolyticum.
Customers can be assured that work is underway to ensure there will be no disruption in supply, quality, and customer service as HEALTHPOINT takes on SANTYL manufacturing, distribution, and marketing. Customers can now order directly from HEALTHPOINT. Customer representatives will be available by phone to answer any questions and guarantee a smooth transition.

New Huntleigh Healthcare System Regulates Mattress Pressure, Offers 24-Hour Care

Huntleigh Healthcare introduces the AUTO LOGICTM 200 system, part of its exciting Logic Range line. Leading-edge technology provides an automatic, self-setting, alternating-pressure mattress replacement and seat cushion combination with battery backup, providing 24-hour care for patients.

For optimal pressure area management of high-risk patients, the AUTO LOGIC 200 system uses self-set technology (SST) to control the mattress pressure. In alternating or constant low pressure (CLP) modes, an advanced microprocessor system regularly assesses the body mass distribution of patients and readjusts cell air pressures to suit their individual requirements. This feature ensures excellent interface pressures for optimum comfort and effective prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers, as does the seat cushion’s novel V-shape.
With the optional battery back-up feature, patients can continue to receive alternating pressure therapy in case of a power outage or during transport for 24-hour care. A fully charged battery will provide a minimum of 8 hours of operation without an electric supply. The pump has an audible and visual alarm to warn when there are approximately 2 hours of battery life left. The battery will also recharge itself when the pump is plugged in.

New Portable Urine Collection and Containment System to be Unveiled at Meeting

UrAssistTM, a new urine collection and containment system for individuals with limited mobility, will be introduced to urologists at the American Urological Association’s annual meeting in Atlanta, Ga, May 20–25, 2006.
UrAssist is a discreet, portable unit for men and women suffering from urge or functional incontinence. It offers individuals who are disabled, non- or partially ambulatory, elderly, and/or undergoing post-operative rehabilitation an easy, hygienic, and private way to collect and discard urine.

Created by Preferred Medical Devices (PMD) of Boca Raton, Fla, UrAssist utilizes a proprietary vacuum pump-assisted technology. The battery-operated system quietly draws urine from a collection cup through a plastic tube into a collection bag that stores a day’s amount of urine. It easily attaches to most wheelchairs and scooters, weighing only 3 lbs when empty.
Since UrAssist is noninvasive, it reduces moisture near the user, which may diminish the risk of skin irritation, rashes, sores, and infection. It may also reduce infection and treatment costs resulting from catheterization and slip-and-fall accidents from hurrying to the bathroom. UrAssist will be available by late summer 2006 and sold through a network of medical equipment dealers.
