Clinical and Financial Strategies for the Extended Care Professional

Executive Desk:

Effective Leaders are Effective Managers, Too

Why is it that no one aspires to be a good manager these days? While good leaders are essential for galvanizing people and moving organizations forward, managers are not any less important. Managers have to get things done through others. The manager is supposed to plan, organize, coordinate, and control.

Weaving a Web
Editor's Message:
Weaving a Web

- Ryan Dougherty

I
t’s no secret that the communications landscape is shifting, as more and more readers go to the Web for their news and/or to comment on articles and interact with their peers and thought leaders. We at ECPN are striving to leverage our content accordingly.
To see one example, visit http://woundcareblogs.com. The blog aims to be “the voice of the wound care community” and feature podcasts, videos, visitor-uploaded images and files, and links to articles and websites relevant to the wound care professional. Let us know what you think of the site, and please feel free to suggest another clinical or financial topic related to long-term care that you think warrants its own interactive blog.
Another site to visit is that of the Symposium on Regulatory Issues for Management in Long-Term Care (SORIM LTC) at www.sorimltc.com. There you can see full video presentations from the 2007 conference, on everything from reimbursement in long-term care to a statewide pressure ulcer collaborative. This builds on the series of articles—the sixth of which can be found on page 24—published in ECPN this year. Visitors can also monitor the agenda for the 2008 SORIM LTC conference as it takes shape. Our hope is that these and future websites build on the print version of ECPN in making your jobs a little easier; please let us know how we’re doing.

In This Issue

Included in this issue are the sixth article in the “MIST Therapy® System: Thoughts on Therapy” series, the debut of “Commentary,” news on physician groups increasing care quality and saving money in the Pay for Performance (P4P) demonstration program, and articles on the following topics: preparing for the obesity epidemic, empowering staff to solve problems, enzymes for debridement and healing, fall risk and Alzheimer’s disease, ensuring survey readiness every day, the Other Medicare Required Assessment (OMRA) type of Minimum Data Set (MDS), and the nutritional benefits of omega-3 fatty acids.
As always, thank you for reading ECPN.
